Summary:
It's Christmastime at Whit's End. Whit, Tom, and Officer Harley are setting
up the tree, and Connie is doling out hot chocolate. Two of the kids are
arguing about the meaning of giving gifts. Whit tries to convince them that
"it's not the gift but the thought that counts," and "it's more blessed to
give than to receive."
When the kids scoff at this, Whit comically presents for them the O. Henry
story, The Gift of the Magi, told in the style of a "Fractured Fairy Tale."
In it, Madge cuts off her lovely hair to buy "her guy, Guy," a new chain for
his watch. But Madge doesn't realize that Guy has sold his watch to buy
Madge some beautiful combs for her hair. Each of them sell their most prized
possession to give the other a gift-much like God did for us when He sent
His only begotten Son to die so that we may have eternal life.
Discussion Questions:
Madge & Guy sacrificed their greatest possession for one another. Have yo
uever sacrificed to give someone a gift? Why is sacrifice important?
What is the greatest gift you have ever received? The greatest gift you’ve
ever given?
Have you accepted God’s gift of eternal life?
This is one of only three episodes where our announcer, Chris Lansdowne,
appeared as a character. The other two are AIO #92, "The Ill-Gotten Deed,"
and AIO #107, "Bad Luck."
